How does Residential Rainwater Collection Affect Streams & Salmon Habitat?

How does RWC for sole source residential domestic water effect our streams and salmon habitat?

In accordance with Washington State’s instream rule restricting new wells in the Skagit River Basin, some land owners are pursuing rainwater collection as their sole source of water to achieve a building permit. There seems to be gridlock between the Department of Ecology, local tribes, land owners, and the county planning department. Aquifer recharge, instream flow, and salmon habitat are the concerns being discussed. Past studies have shown that rainwater catchment for domestic sole source residential use enables rainwater to infiltrate into the aquifer and benefits the creeks, streams and rivers.

Typically there is more concern with summer rain than winter. According to a 1981 Water Supply Report for Jefferson County “Actual evapotranspiration (portion of water lost to the air or used by plants) exceeds soil moisture utilization.”

In a study, “analysis if rainwater catchment in WRIA 17”, by Kurt Unger PHD. Dept. of Ecology Washington State., “Aquifer recharge occurs predominately in deforested or partially deforested areas due to evapotranspiration rates.”

Ground water is more enhanced by collecting rainwater, it’s domestic use, then recharging the aquifer by a leach field. This is most important during the summer months do to evapotranspiration. Mr. Unger goes on to say ” Given the above analysis, it is the author’s opinion that building permits issued in the WRIA 17 based on rainwater catchment as sole source of supply will not pose a threat to streams. In fact such catchment systems will likely provide hydrological benefits.”

RainBank Rainwater Collection Systems’ president Ken Blair has been invited to be a guest speaker at the American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association 2014 annual conference in Phoenix, Arizona on November 17th. Ken is honored to be recognized among his peers as a leader in rainwater collection and storm water management.

Ken will  discuss “urban rainwater case studies”, an in depth look at decentralized water systems for commercial and residential application in the Seattle area. Both potable and non potable systems designed and constructed by RainBank Rainwater Collection Systems will be highlighted, with emphasis on reduction of storm water run off.

The time is now for Seattle to be recognized as a leader in Green Storm Water Infrastructure. Protecting our natural environment from the pollutants from storm water run off is essential for our way if life in the Pacific North West.

Rainwater Collection a Reliable Water Supply AlternativeAccording to a recent article published by ARCSA (American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association), whose mission is to promote sustainable rainwater collection practices to help solve potable, non-potable, stormwater and energy challenges throughout the world, a well-designed, installed and maintained rainwater harvesting system can provide high-quality water for potable and non-potable, residential and commercial uses.

Below are some notable findings on rainwater collection compiled by ARCSA from the 2013 Report Card on America’s Infrastructure from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Water Companies:

• 7 TRILLION gallons per day are wasted due to 240,000 water main breaks each year
• Over $1 TRILLION is needed over 10 years to repair water systems
